中國大陸四川成都華希昆蟲博物館23日宣布，發現一隻體型巨大的巨型蚊子，翅膀展開長度達到11公分寬，體長接近5公分，很可能是世界上最大的蚊子。幸好，這種巨型蚊子不靠吸血維生，只會吸食花蜜。

根據《封面新聞》報導，成都華希昆蟲博物館館長趙力表示，這種蚊子叫巨大蚊Holorusia mikado，又被稱為米卡多大蚊或帝王大蚊，屬於雙翅目大蚊科巨大蚊屬。這種蚊子最初在日本被發現，由英國昆蟲學家韋斯特伍德（John Obadiah Westwood）於1876年命名，其中mikado的意思是指日本天皇。

根據《不列顛國際百科全書》（Britannica International encyclopedia）記載，巨大蚊是世上最大的蚊子種類，翅展寬度達8公分，大蚊科則是蚊子中個體最大的類群。2017年8月，成都華希博物館在四川青成山採集到翅展達11.15公分的巨大蚊，已經超過百科全書紀錄，因此很可能是已知世界上最大的蚊子個體。

大蚊科在全世界已知超過1萬6000種，在中國已知有800多種，包含蚊子中體型最大的種類。在川西地區，巨大蚊主要分佈在成都平原海拔2200公尺以下山區，由於體型巨大，這種蚊子的飛行能力並不強，通常採跳躍式飛行。

一般人對蚊子的印象是會吸血，因此見到這麼巨大的蚊子難免感到害怕，但其實這種巨大蚊並不會吸血，只靠吸食花蜜維生，其成蟲壽命非常短暫，一般只有數日。還有一些種類的巨大蚊因為口器退化，成蟲後甚至不再進食，只靠幼蟲時期儲存的養分生活。這種巨大蚊的腳非常長，若被抓住會「斷腿求生」，部分種類的雌性大蚊還會像遠處「射卵」自保，最遠距離可達20公分。
